Plugin · MIDI sequencer, arpeggiator and generator

BigSeq

Three ways to write a part. One engine.

BigSeq is a step sequencer, an arpeggiator and a seeded generator in one MIDI plugin. Write steps in SEQ, play held keys through ARP, or let GEN invent a phrase from a seed, all in your key and scale. Then move your synth's knobs with MOD lanes and drag the result straight into your DAW.

€39 on its own, or inside the Sonic Suite for €17.99 a month. Ways to own

BigSeq with the SEQ engine in ROLL view: a piano roll in key and scale, with chords, velocity and the eight knobs
Inside the plugin

Write it, play it, or let it surprise you.

One window. The left rail picks what plays; the screen and the eight knobs under it change with that choice. SEQ, ARP and GEN all share one key and scale.

BigSeq: everything in one window, with numbered markers
The window

Everything in one window

Pick the engine on the left, shape it with eight knobs, and keep key, scale and seed in reach.

  1. Presets Factory and your own folders, with Save, Save As, Rename and Delete.
  2. Key and scale SEQ, ARP and GEN all play in it. Hold a key and the pattern follows it.
  3. Seed tools Back, dice, seed number, forward and a heart to keep favourites.
  4. Play and tempo Its own transport in the standalone app; follows the host in your DAW.
  5. Mono / Poly How many notes sound at once.
  6. SEQ, ARP, GEN Three engines, one plays at a time.
  7. Held, Hold, Keys The keys you hold, a latch, and a mouse keyboard.
  8. Screen Lanes or a piano roll in SEQ, the held pattern in ARP, the last two bars in GEN.
  9. 8 knobs Labels follow the engine; Shift + drag for fine steps.
  10. Global controls Transpose and gate on everything that plays, MIDI channel and Panic.
  11. Freeze and bars Repeat a GEN phrase and set its length.
  12. Print to SEQ and Drag MIDI Turn what you hear into editable steps or a MIDI clip.
BigSeq: draw notes with the pencil
SEQ: ROLL

Draw notes with the pencil

SEQ opens on ROLL, a piano roll in your key and scale. LANES and MOD sit next to it, on the same pattern. Switch views any time.

  1. Draw Click to add a note, drag right for a long one, right-click to delete.
  2. In key Rows are scale steps; Ctrl + drag adds a sharp or flat.
  3. Hear and select a row Click a note name to hear it. Shift-click a name to select its row.
  4. Edit many notes Shift-click notes, or Ctrl+A for all of them, then drag or use the arrows to move the selection.
  5. GRID Switch it off and a note can sit between grid lines. The free timing is saved with the project.
  6. Chords and ties Chords in amber, tied notes across steps.
  7. Zoom From 4 bars down to 1/32 and 1/64 for rolls and ripples.
  8. Velocity strip Draw dynamics under the notes.
  9. Undo Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Shift+Z; a whole drag is one step.
BigSeq: stay in the scale
SNAP and KEYS

Stay in the scale

SNAP pulls what plays into your key and scale, and KEYS shows you where each note lands.

  1. SNAP to scale Every note lands in the scale. Switch it off to play keys as pressed.
  2. Scale library 38 scales, plus a Custom scale you set key by key.
  3. Scale Anchor Lock key and scale, then browse presets without losing them.
  4. KEYS Opens below the note rows, so every note stays visible, and lights the scale.
BigSeq: every lane on one screen
SEQ: LANES

Every lane on one screen

Notes, velocity, gate, probability and the step row, each with its own length and speed, so patterns drift against each other.

  1. Notes Drag a step up or down; it moves by scale steps and stays in key. Amber stacks are chords.
  2. Velocity and gate Draw accents and note lengths across the steps.
  3. Probability Steps that play some passes and skip others, the same way every time for a given seed.
  4. Step row Mute, unmute and tie steps.
  5. Lane length Any lane from 1 to 256 steps for polymeter grooves.
  6. Rate per lane x1/4 to x4 per lane for triplets and drifting accents.
BigSeq: arps from the keys you hold
ARP

Arps from the keys you hold

Up, down, up-down, order, random and chord modes, with octave range, skip, repeat, span and bend.

  1. Modes Up, Up-Dn, Order, Random and Chord.
  2. Rate Down to 1/32, plus a 1/32 roll that plays each note twice.
  3. Skip and repeat Random gaps and stutters that repeat the same way every pass.
  4. Span Restart the walk every few steps for 3-against-4 figures.
  5. Bend Acid slides between notes with glide time and curve.
  6. Hold Latch a chord and play hands-free.
BigSeq: a generator you can steer
GEN

A generator you can steer

GEN invents a new phrase every bar from the seed, in your key and scale. Keep the one you like.

  1. Dice and seed history Roll new phrases and step back through the last 16.
  2. Freeze Repeat the current phrase, set its length in bars.
  3. Notes page Vary, rest, density, octave and chord amount, from calm to busy.
  4. Rhythm page Four note lengths with how much of the time each takes.
  5. Voicing page Voices with spread, inversion and offbeat control.
  6. Print to SEQ Turn the phrase into steps you can edit note by note.
BigSeq: chords you can dial in
GEN: Degree Stack

Chords you can dial in

Degree Stack builds GEN's chords from 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th amounts.

  1. Amounts Turn a degree up for more of it: raise the 7th and most chords become 7ths.
  2. A lock on each Lock a degree to keep it in every chord.
BigSeq: give a phrase a shape
GEN: Contours

Give a phrase a shape

Eight shapes, such as RISE, ARCH and PEDAL, steer where the notes go while the dice still pick them.

  1. PULL How strongly the phrase follows the shape.
  2. RANGE How far the shape travels.
  3. See it A line on screen shows the shape.
BigSeq: move your synth's knobs
MOD lanes

Move your synth's knobs

Five CC lanes that play in every mode, one value per 1/16, each with its own length.

  1. CC lanes Five lanes, any CC from 0 to 119, drawn with the mouse.
  2. Learn Turn a knob on your controller and the lane takes it.
  3. Velocity range VEL LO and VEL HI squeeze every note into a range.
  4. Human Small velocity changes that repeat the same way every pass.
  5. Once Play one pass and stop, for fills and risers.
  6. MIDI channel Notes and CCs out on the channel you pick.
BigSeq: beats straight onto the forge pads
With Sonic Forge

Beats straight onto the Forge pads

The Forge Pads scale names notes by pad, so a pattern lands on the kick, snare and hats without a map.

  1. Forge Pads scale Rows named A1 to D8, the Forge's four rows of eight pads.
  2. Forge Drums preset Kick on A1, snare on A2, hats on A3, ready to play.
  3. Drag MIDI Drop the beat into your DAW as a clip, whole bars long.
BigSeq: try it for 30 days

The BigFreq Sonic Suite: Sonic Vault, Sonic Forge, BigSeq and BigFuzz
Better together

Plays the whole Sonic Suite

BigSeq writes MIDI for any synth and plays Sonic Forge pads through the Forge Pads scale. Coming later: BigSeq inside Sonic Forge, so SEQ, GEN and ARP play the pads with no routing at all.

Install and help

Why is BigSeq silent?

BigSeq makes MIDI only and plays while the transport runs. MIDI output is also paused until it is activated; your pattern stays. Route its MIDI to a synth track with monitoring on, check the MIDI channel (CH 01 by default), and use a short, plucky patch: a slow attack can be silent on 1/16 and 1/32 notes.

Is there a trial?

Yes, 30 days. Start it from the activation panel, online or offline.

Does it work in my DAW?

Yes. BigSeq loads as a VST3 instrument that sends MIDI out, so look for it among your instruments. Each DAW routes MIDI its own way; the routing guide in the BigSeq folder covers Cubase, Ableton Live, Bitwig and Reaper.

Can I edit what GEN or ARP plays?

Yes. Print to SEQ turns it into steps you can edit note by note, and Drag MIDI puts it in your DAW as a clip.

Is there a Mac version?

Yes, as a VST3. AU is coming.
